Dr. Sah Dev Gupta was born on November 20, 1928. After his schooling at BD High School, Ambala Cantt, he completed FSc from SD College Ambala Cantt and obtained Licentiate in Medicine and Surgery (LSMF) degree from Calcutta. He received MBBS degree from Medical College Amritsar in 1953 and did post-graduation in Ophthalmology from Madras Medical College. In 1960 Dr. Gupta moved to Edinburgh (UK) and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS). After returning to India, from 1962 to 1974 Dr. Gupta taught at various Medical Colleges and was Assistant Professor with PGI Chandigarh. During this period he guided the thesis of many postgraduates and published several papers in Ophthalmic Medical Journals.
In 1974 Dr. Gupta resigned from PGI and returned to his hometown, Ambala Cantt, where he set up his own private practice under the name of Dev Eye Hospital, X-Ray & Ultra-sound Centre. He remembered his father’s wish for him to provide free of cost treatment to the poor and needy and built a team of volunteer doctors and paramedical staff and conducted more than 100 Eye Operation Camps in collaboration with Rotary International in rural and semi-urban localities.
With his sincere efforts and positive response from people, Dev Eye Hospital made its name in the area. He was a very humble, polite, soft-spoken, honest, straightforward, dedicated, and thorough professional who made his name in this region. He was a founder member of Shri Ram Swarup Memorial Trust and actively supported all its ventures.
After serving society and numerous patients relentlessly, he breathed his last on February 8, 2020. His demise caused great loss to society, SRSMT, and the family. We always pray for peace for his soul.
